Lewis Hamilton: F1 star’s ‘why bother’ social media posts about ‘environmental issues and not related to racing’, say Mercedes

Mercedes remain uncertain over the reasons behind Lewis Hamilton’s concerning social media posts, but the F1 team say his ‘why bother’ comments are not to do with racing.

Hamilton sparked concern on Tuesday by writing on Instagram that he feels ‘like giving up on everything’ given the ‘world is such a mess and people don’t seem to care’.

The Brit said he would take time to gather his thoughts, and he was offered much support on social media by fans.

Hamilton, who on Sunday edged closer to a sixth world championship by finishing third at the Japanese Grand Prix, also wrote about the impending ‘extinction of our race’ and urged his followers to become vegan to save the planet.

Mercedes have since commented on the social media posts, with the Brackley-based team saying they believe the posts were about environmental issues rather than possibly referring to Hamilton giving up on racing.

“I think he was referring to environmental issues and not anything related to racing,” a Mercedes spokesperson told Germany’s SID news agency. “However, I’m not sure.”
