F1 is not alone in being affected, however, with dozens of other sporting events being abandoned while the world tries to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Norris, who has more than 200,000 Twitch followers, broadcasted his battle in ‘Not the AUS GP’, which was hosted by Veloce Esports.

The live stream proved a huge hit with fans, getting over 70,000 viewers and smashing F1’s all-time concurrent record.

On the broadcast, he said: “I’m so happy right now! I’m shivering, kind of nuts. Am I the highest viewed on Twitch right now?

“I never thought I’d get here. Feels like a lot of support for me, thank you very much.”

McLaren driver Norris finished sixth in the virtual race that also featured Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois and former F1 drivers Stoffel Vandoorne and Esteban Gutierrez.

Coronavirus: Formula 1 season to start in June after Australian Grand Prix is cancelled and Bahrain, Vietnam and China races are postponed

Formula 1 bosses are set to delay the start of the new 2020 season until June after the Bahrain and Vietnam Grands Prix were postponed due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The season-opening Australian Grand Prix was cancelled on Friday, just 90 minutes before practice was due to begin, following McLaren’s withdrawal from the event after one of their mechanics tested positive for COVID-19.

And now next weekend’s race in Bahrain, which was set to go ahead behind closed doors, and the inaugural race in Vietnam’s capital Hanoi have since both been called off.

Formula 1 chiefs released a statement on Friday afternoon claiming they ‘expect to begin the Championship in Europe at the end of May’.

However, according to Press Association it’s more likely that will be pushed back until the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, pencilled in for June 7, at the earliest.

As it stands, the season is due to end in Abu Dhabi on November 29.

However PA also claim that race could be pushed back until December to allow room for next month’s already postponed Chinese Grand Prix, and the race in Hanoi to be squeezed back into a rejigged calendar.

The Dutch Grand Prix, the first race in the Netherlands for 36 years, is due to take place on May 3, but that might now be moved to August, with the sport’s customary summer break scrapped. As many as 18 races might be staged in six months.

The historic Monaco Grand Prix, set for May 24, could become the sport’s biggest casualty, while there may also be no room for the races in Bahrain and Spain.

There are no plans for the Australian GP in Melbourne to be rescheduled for later in the year.

“The scale of this is massive,” said F1 motorsport boss Ross Brawn. “We want to try and build the Formula One season back up, but we have to be realistic when that can start again.

“The teams survive on their funding from races. Each race you lose, it has an impact.

“There is a strong resilience in Formula One and we have got plans to rebuild the season and try to accommodate as many of the lost races.

“People need to show tolerance in terms of how we build the rest of the year, and the teams are in the right place to understand this necessity.”

Six-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, who had already been deeply critical of the sport’s move to head to Melbourne, welcomed F1’s decision.

“The reality is, this is really serious with people dying every day,” Hamilton, who left Australia on Friday, said on Twitter.

“Lots of people [are] ill and even if they are not ill, many people [are] being affected financially and emotionally.”

Fourteen McLaren staff have been placed into quarantine after coming into contact with their infected colleague, who tested positive for the virus on Thursday night.

All returning members of Hamilton’s Mercedes race team meanwhile, will not attend their HQ in Brackley over the next fortnight to avoid the potential of passing on a disease which has killed more than 5,000 people.

Formula 1: Australia Grand Prix cancelled due to coronavirus as F1 bosses perform U-turn and more races could follow

Formula One has confirmed the season-opening Australian Grand Prix is off.

The official verdict arrived just after 10am local time in Melbourne following almost 12 hours of confusion sparked by McLaren’s withdrawal in the wake of a staff member testing positive for coronavirus.

F1 bosses have since discussed suspending the start of the new season until June.

The sport’s traditional curtain raiser at Melbourne’s Albert Park was officially axed just 90 minutes before practice was due to begin on Friday.

The statement from F1’s governing body, the FIA read: “Following the confirmation that a member of the McLaren Racing Team has tested positive for COVID-19 and the team’s decision to withdraw from the Australian Grand Prix, the FIA and Formula 1 convened a meeting of the other nine team principals on Thursday evening.

“Those discussions concluded with a majority view of the teams that the race should not go ahead. The FIA and Formula One, with the full support of the Australian Grand Prix Corporation (AGPC) have therefore taken the decision that all Formula One activity for the Australian Grand Prix is cancelled.”

Sources indicated to the PA news agency in the early hours of Friday that the race would be scrapped. But the failure by F1’s American owners’ Liberty Media and the FIA to act quickly resulted in thousands of fans arriving at the Albert Park venue for practice.

The chairman of the Australian Grand Prix corporation even told local breakfast television that the race would go ahead as planned.

Just moments before F1 – who will now face strong criticism for their handling of the eventual cancellation – confirmed the race would no longer go ahead, Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes team revealed they had written a letter to the sport’s bosses requesting for the race to be scrapped.

The Chinese Grand Prix, scheduled to take place in Shanghai on April 19, has been postponed due to the coronavirus, with the first case identified in Wuhan last December.

And more races could follow.

Although next weekend’s behind-closed-doors race in Bahrain is yet to be formally called off, it is understood that the view of the sport’s travelling circus is to delay the campaign until the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, pencilled in for June 7, at the earliest.

As it stands, the season is due to end in Abu Dhabi on November 29, but it is understood the race could be pushed back until December to allow room for next month’s postponed Chinese Grand Prix and the inaugural race in Vietnam, currently pencilled in for April 5, to be squeezed back into a rejigged calendar.

Formula One’s Bahrain Grand Prix will take place without spectators due to coronavirus outbreak

Formula One’s Bahrain Grand Prix will take place without spectators due to the coronavirus outbreak, race organisers have announced.

It is due to take place from March 20-22 as the second round of the new season but has become the latest sporting event to close to the public because of the virus.

A statement from race organisers said: “In consultation with our international partners and the Kingdom’s national health taskforce, Bahrain has made the decision to hold this year’s Bahrain Grand Prix as a participants-only event.

“As an F1 host nation, balancing the welfare of supporters and race goers is a tremendous responsibility. Given the continued spread of Covid-19 globally, convening a major sporting event which is open to the public and allows thousands of international travellers and local fans to interact in close proximity would not be the right thing to do at the present time.

“But to ensure that neither the sport, nor its global supporter base, is unduly impacted, the race weekend itself will still go ahead as a televised event.”

The statement added: “Bahrain’s own early actions to prevent, identify and isolate cases of individuals with Covid-19 has been extremely successful to date. The approach has involved rapid, proactive measures, identifying those affected by the virus, of which the overwhelming majority of cases relate to those travelling into the country by air.

“Aggressive social distancing measures have further increased the effectiveness of preventing the virus’ spread, something that would clearly be near impossible to maintain were the race to have proceeded as originally planned.

“We know how disappointed many will be by this news, especially for those planning to travel to the event, which has become a cornerstone event of the international F1 calendar, but safety has to remain our utmost priority.”

Formula 1: Australian Grand Prix going ahead as planned on March 15 despite coronavirus fears

The Australian Grand Prix is due to go ahead as planned despite the ongoing coronavirus epidemic already postponing one race of the 2020 Formula 1 season.

Organisers of the race at the Albert Park Circuit in Melbourne insist the opening round of the season is ‘all systems go’ with slightly under a fortnight before the March 15 event.

Even though the race does not take place until a week on Sunday, the majority of F1 personnel are set to travel to Melbourne at the latter end of this week.

The Australian GP Corporation are working with health authorities over the coronavirus outbreak, but their chief executive, Andrew Westacott, says all is going ahead as planned as of today.

“We are all systems go.” said Westacott in a statement:

“At this stage there is no indication of further travel bans, nor is there any indication that Formula One and the teams will not be arriving as usual.

“Formula One has again confirmed overnight that the Australian Grand Prix is going ahead.”

COVID-19 has already affected the 2020 F1 season.

The Chinese Grand Prix, scheduled to take place in Shanghai on April 19, has been postponed due to the coronavirus, with the first case identified in Wuhan last December.
