Sir Stirling Moss: Sporting world, including Lewis Hamilton and Frank Bruno, pays tribute to Formula One legend

The sporting world was saddened on Sunday following news of Formula One legend Sir Stirling Moss’ death at the age of 90.

His wife Lady Moss said he died peacefully at his London home following a long illness.

“It was one lap too many,” she said. “He just closed his eyes.”

Moss won 212 of the 529 races he competed in but famously never won the F1 world title.

However, Enzo Ferrari once called Moss the greatest driver in the world while five-time champion Juan Manuel Fangio – who beat Moss to the title three times between 1955 and 1957 – called Moss the best of his era.

Moss finished runner-up in the championships standings four times and finished third three times in a career during which he won 16 Grands Prix.

But his outstanding sportsmanship ensured he was always a popular member of the racing fraternity.

So it’s no surprise that many from motorsport and sport in general took to Twitter to pay tribute to Moss.

One heart-felt tribute came from former boxer Frank Bruno, who said Moss offered him a lot of support over many years.

Give COVID-19 the red card

The quicker we work together to stop coronavirus spreading, the sooner we can get back into the pubs, the gyms and stadiums and arenas to see live sport again…

STAY AT HOME. Only leave for the following purposes:

  • to shop for basic essentials – only when you really need to
  • to do one form of exercise a day – such as a run, walk or cycle, alone or with other people you live with
  • for any medical need – for example, to visit a pharmacy or deliver essential supplies to a vulnerable person
  • to travel to and from work – but only where this is absolutely necessary

For more info and tips, visit the NHS website.

The government has also issued further detail on what we can do during lockdown.

Everyone should do what they can to stop coronavirus spreading.
