Katie Boulter in tears as she dedicates stunning Wimbledon win over 2021 finalist Karolina Pliskova to grandmother, who passed away two days before match
Katie Boulter was in tears after her stunning win over Karolina Pliskova, dedicating the triumph at Wimbledon to her grandmother, who passed away two days ago.
The British No.3 claimed the biggest win of her career as she fought back from a set down against the 2021 runner-up to win 3-6 7-6 (7-4) 6-4.
She was unable to fight back the tears as Boulter revealed the match was played amid an exceptionally difficult time for her and her family.
“Oh my god I have absolutely no words right now. I am literally shaking. The crowd was unbelievable so thank you for getting me through that,” Boulter said.
“I’m probably going to getting emotional. My gran passed away two days ago so I’d like to dedicate that to her today.
“It’s a dream come true for me, hopefully I can have many more matches here, and if I can have you behind me for those I can probably go a long way.”
There was more success for British stars on Thursday as Heather Watson, who cut an emotional figure after her first round win, sealed her place in the third round.
Watson got the better of China’s Wang Qiang 7-5 6-4, the match being finished off after it got under way on Wednesday night.

Liam Broady made the third round of a grand-slam for the first time with a stunning comeback win to beat 12th seed Diego Schwartzman in five sets at Wimbledon.
The duo had met at the same stage at the All England Club last year and the Argentinian proved too strong, which looked to be the case again when he reeled off 11 games in a row to take control of the round two tie.
Broady dug deep and after he edged a fourth set tie-breaker, the world 132 had the momentum and clinched a career-best result 6-2 4-6 0-6 7-6 (6) 6-1 in three hours and 47 minutes.
He faces the winner of Jack Draper’s clash against Australian Alex de Minaur – Broady likening Draper to Manchester City footballer Phil Fiden.
However, British wildcard Alastair Gray, who’s ranked 288th and making his singles debut at the All England Club, fell to defeat against 11th seed Taylor Fritz, losing 3-6 6-7 (3-7) 3-6.
