Max Verstappen says ‘no hard feelings’ with Lewis Hamilton after ‘disrespectful’ British Grand Prix celebrations last year but criticises Mercedes ‘moaning’
Max Verstappen has said there are ‘no hard feelings’ over his shocking crash with Lewis Hamilton at the British Grand Prix last year, but has criticised Mercedes ‘moaning’.
The reigning world champion heads to Silverstone with a healthy championship lead over teammate Sergio Perez, but as last year proved, things can quickly change in Britain.
The Dutchman had a similarly comfortable points advantage over Hamilton ahead of the Brit’s home race last season, until a jaw-dropping first lap collision.
The title contenders staged an epic battle through the first half of the opening lap, before neither gave way heading into Copse corner, which resulted in Hamilton clipping Verstappen’s rear wheel, sending him into the wall at 51G.
Verstappen went to hospital for precautionary checks, while Hamilton went on to celebrate a home win which his rival called ‘disrespectful and unsportsmanlike’.
Red Bull boss Christian Horner said his team are ‘out for revenge this weekend’ but Verstappen didn’t agree with those sentiments.
“Of course, the crash wasn’t nice, but I love the track,” the Dutchman said.
“I love going there. It’s [a] really good atmosphere with Formula 1, and we’re going really quick around there.

“So I don’t have any hard feelings. And I also think very easily I can put these things aside. Of course, it wasn’t nice what happened, but at the end of the day, you deal with it.
“It wasn’t a nice impact for me personally, but we go out there again and try to win of course.”
Verstappen was also asked about the prospect of being booed by the British crowd, like Hamilton’s former rivals Nico Rosberg and Sebastian Vettel have been in the past.
“The good thing is, once we jump in the car with the helmet on, you don’t hear anything,” he answered.
“And they love motorsport. I mean, it’s such a big history in England in general, right?”
Despite tensions seeming to have cooled between last year’s title rivals with Mercedes well off the pace this season, Verstappen did admit some frustrations over the Silver Arrows’ complaints.
New aerodynamic regulations for the 2022 season have seen cars bouncing on the straights, with Mercedes seemingly struggling more than any other constructor.
Both team boss Toto Wolff and Hamilton have described the W13 an ‘undrivable’ and are pushing for change, but Verstappen is one of many who are against that.
Asked about the bouncing, the 24-year-old joked: “We love it, it’s so nice.
“Not every car, but quite a few cars on the straight they’re going like this [indicating bouncing with his hand], especially that beautiful grey car, silver car.
“Some teams have that more under control than others and when it happens at 300 [kph], it can be painful for some if it’s really aggressive.
“Especially one team have been moaning about it a lot so that’s why they will try to investigate it and try to understand how we can limit these things.
“This weekend will be the first try, how we can limit it for the drivers in terms of comfort, but it will be quite interesting to see if it changes up the performance between cars.”

‘I wanted to remind everyone that I’m pretty good’ – Nick Kyrgios trades tantrums for showmanship as Australian puts on Wimbledon masterclass to reach third round after spitting controversy
It was a completely different Nick Kyrgios that stepped out onto Court 2 at Wimbledon on Thursday afternoon, swapping his bad temper for first-class showmanship at SW19.
The Australian wasted no time in dispatching Filip Krajinovic, the number 26 seed, 6-2 6-3 6-1 in just one hour and 25 minutes.
Kyrgios made headline news earlier this week when he was involved in a fiery encounter against Britain’s Paul Jubb.
He was arguing with umpires, called a line judge a ‘snitch’ and demanded a spectator be removed for heckling.
The 26-year-old continued to rant about the crowd’s behaviour in his post-match press conference and admitted to spitting in the direction of one person.
However, the Kyrgios who turned up to face Krajinovic on Thursday bared no resemblance from the man two days prior.
He got to work immediately and blew his opponent off the court, showing exactly why people love him and why he is such a highly-regarded talent.
Apart from one minor disagreement over a line call, there were no arguments with umpires or crowd members… just incredible tennis.

His serving was untouchable, firing down 24 aces and winning 93 per cent of points on his first serve.
He faced zero break points and fired down 50 winners, while his opponent had just 12.
The Australian even showed brilliant sportsmanship towards the end of his straight sets blitz, as he complemented Krajinovic on a serve that was too good for him to return.
Speaking on court after his win, Kyrgios said: “I’ve been playing some really good tennis over the last month, so I was surprised the way I played the other day. I wasn’t great.
“There were a lot of positives. I didn’t play anywhere near my best and got through it.
“But today I was in my zone, great body language and played well.
“I just wanted to remind everyone I’m pretty good.”
In this mood, no one will be wanting to face the Australian.

Drive to Survive season 5 release date: Max Verstappen ends three-year boycott of Netflix series to star alongside Lewis Hamilton after talks with producers about ‘fake rivalries’
Max Verstappen has handed Netflix a huge boost by revealing he is set to end his public boycott of their hit show Drive to Survive.
The reigning Formula One world champion has been a notable absentee from the documentary series since season 1.
Verstappen was angered by his portrayal when Netflix first released the access-all-areas docuseries back in 2019.
The Red Bull star publicly slammed the show for creating fake rivalries between drivers and making him look arrogant.
As a result, Verstappen refused to do interviews for Drive to Survive despite being a key star for series four that showcased his title battle with Lewis Hamilton.
Speaking back in March, he said: “I think that was already ruined after Season One. I think I’m quite a down to earth guy, and I just want it to be facts and don’t hype it up.
“I understand of course it needs to be like that for Netflix, that’s what every series on there as well or documentary or whatever you call it, it’s just not my thing.
“I’ll probably watch it and see how over the top it is, and just continue with my life. I’ll probably watch some other documentaries on Netflix.”

However, Drive to Survive has been credited with F1’s recent surge in interest across the world and especially in America.
It has since been renewed by Netflix for a further two seasons at least and Verstappen has finally been coaxed back into returning.
But what has he said and when can we expect it to be released? talkSPORT.com takes a look…
Drive To Survive season 5: Release date
The next series of the Netflix F1 show is due to be released in early 2023, between late February and early March.
Although an exact date is yet to be confirmed, it is usually one week before the start of the new Formula One season.
The 2023 campaign will get underway once again with the Bahrain Grand Prix on March 17 meaning fans can expect DTS around March 10 – which would be a day earlier than when series 4 dropped.
The series will be exclusively available to view on Netflix, with subscription details available here.
Drive to Survive season 5: What is it and what will it explore?
The documentary is a 10-part series that tells the story of a season in the life of Formula 1.
This includes all of the build-up to the previous season, race action, key talking points and exclusive interviews with drivers, team principles and other key figures within the sport.
Among the storylines from this year so far have included Hamilton and Mercedes’ continued struggles to compete at the front.
Meanwhile, Verstappen and Red Bull face a new challenge in the form of Charles Leclerc driving in a resurgent Ferrari.
Drive to Survive season 5: What has been said?
Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali held talks with Netflix over the way the series was produced following Verstappen’s complaints.
And now it seems the Dutchman may be ready to give Drive to Survive a second chance for the release of season 5.
Speaking on the Pardon My Take podcast, Verstappen said: “I’m not going to be too negative about it now.
“Because I mean, in the meantime, of course, I’ve talked to the people who are in charge, and who are running the show.
“So I think we actually came to a good understanding for the future, but up until now, that’s why of course last year, I was not really involved.
“I think there were a few things where I was not really happy with and especially, you know, faking rivalries between drivers that for me, is a tough one because of course, that one it was [shown] in America, but also, I think sometimes they portray a few drivers differently to how they actually are.
“And then of course, the people who are new to F1 think ‘oh, this guy is a bit of a d*ck’ or whatever, right, which in real life he’s not.
“But having said that, like I just said before, I think for the future, we came to a good understanding of how we can work together. So yeah, I’m sure in the next one, you will see a little bit more of me.”

Emma Raducanu praised for how she handled ‘extreme pressure’ at Wimbledon but told she must follow Andy Murray, Serena Williams, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic example to unlock full potential
Emma Raducanu has been praised for the way she handled the pressure of Wimbledon, after being knocked out during the first week.
It was not the result that she, and the nation, hoped for as the 19-year-old lost in the second round to Caroline Garcia 6-3 6-3.
The expectation on Raducanu was huge after her shock US Open victory last September, with the teenager herself labelling the pressure on her ‘a joke’.
Her preparation was not ideal with an injury picked up just a couple of weeks before at the Nottingham Open.
But the teen has been hailed for her supreme mentality to deal with such pressures, in what is still only her first full season on the tour.
Former British tennis player Barry Cowan, who famously took Pete Sampras to five sets at Wimbledon in 2001, told talkSPORT Breakfast: “The biggest strength that Raducanu has is her mentality is off the charts.
“She is a born champion, just the way she thinks, the way she handles things.
“I think she has handled it very well this week at Wimbledon, given the extreme pressure she is under externally but also internally.

“I must make that point, she expects to win Wimbledon.”
Raducanu’s coaching situation has been a huge talking point in the recent weeks and months.
She has favoured short spells with coaches, splitting from Nigel Sears – Andy Murray’s father-in-law – after Wimbledon last year, then Andrew Richardson after the US Open, and most recently from Torben Beltz after less than five months.
On her coaching situation, Cowan added: “Funnily enough I got into a heated debate about this yesterday.
“How many great tennis players at 19 years of age haven’t had that consistent message for those most important years of 18-22. Very, very few.
“There will always be an exception and what she is trying to do is go against history. It’s very dangerous to go against history if Rafa Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Andy Murray had a constant message – Serena Williams had a father who did that.
“That is absolutely something she needs to sort out.
“She got to the last-16 at Wimbledon last year, got rid of Nigel Sears, she won the US Open and got rid of her coach.
“She doesn’t have a coach at the moment. Yes, it is important tennis players make their own decisions, but the game needs to improve.
“If her game can improve and work on those aspects that are ultimately with her talent, then she will improve.”
But Cowan urged patience and believed the teenager will be a top player for years to come.
He said: “We shouldn’t worry. She’s 19 years of age.
“If she can have the right people around her to work on her game then in two or three years time she will have no worries at all.”
