Alexander Zverev apologises to Novak Djokovic for ending hopes of Golden Slam with shock victory over world number one at Olympics
Alexander Zverev said sorry for beating Novak Djokovic and ending the world number one’s hopes of a Golden Slam at the Olympics.
Having already won the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon this season, there appeared to be little stopping Djokovic from a gold medal and US Open title next month.
The ‘Calendar Slam’ is still on for the Serbian, but his hopes of a gold medal went up in smoke at Tokyo 2020 on Friday.
After losing to Zverev in the men’s singles semi-final, the 34-year-old then lost in the mixed doubles alongside Nina Stojanovic.
It represented yet another semi-final defeat for Djokovic, who only has one bronze medal to show for his career, from Beijing in 2008.
Zverev, aware that his 1-6 6-3 6-1 victory had denied Djokovic a piece of history, shared a warm embrace with the legend at the net.
“You’re one of the greatest players of all time. I’m sorry for this,” he told his opponent.
Speaking after his surprise victory, the teary German said: “I told him that he’s the greatest of all time, and he will be.
“I know that he was chasing history, is chasing the Golden Slam and was chasing the Olympics, but in these kind of moments me and Novak are very close.
“I feel sorry for Novak, but he’s won 20 grand slams, 550 Masters series or whatever, you can’t have everything.
“It’s an amazing feeling knowing that you’re going to bring the medal back to your house, back home to Germany. It seemed it was impossible to beat him at this event, so I’m very happy right now. But yet there’s still one match to go.”
