Lewis Hamilton reveals he has ‘struggled mentally and emotionally’ as Mercedes superstar opens up on mental health following Formula 1 world championship controversy
Lewis Hamilton has revealed he has ‘struggled mentally and emotionally for a long time’ as the Formula 1 star opened up on his mental health battle.
Hamilton, who finished tenth at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix last Sunday, posted on Instagram on Thursday about a ‘tough year’ on and off the track.
In December, Red Bulls rival Max Verstappen secured his first ever world title after he overtook the Brit on the final lap at the Yas Marina Circuit in a controversial finish to the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
The race was tainted by a dubious safety car procedure, which ultimately cost Hamilton a record-breaking eighth world triumph, with the FIA admitting ‘human error’ following an investigation.
The low of losing out on the title in such dramatic fashion has been followed up with a startling dip in performance for Mercedes at the start of the new season, with big doubts raised over team’s chances of challenging for the title.
Hamilton reached out to his 27.4million followers on social media to talk about his mental health struggles, but had an overall positive message to share with fans.
“It has been such a tough year already with everything that is happening around us,” said the 37-year-old.
“Hard some days to stay positive. I have struggled mentally and emotionally for a long time, to keep going is a constant effort but we have to keep fighting. We have so much to do and to achieve.

“I am writing to tell you it is OK to to feel the way you do, just know that you are not alone and that we are going to get through this.
“A friend reminded me today, you are so powerful and you can do anything you put your mind to. We can do anything we put our mind to.
“Let’s remember to live in gratitude for another day to rise. Sending you love and light.”
Contesting his 16th season on the grid, the Mercedes driver has won more F1 races than any other driver in the sport, winning 103 to date.
He has endured a difficult start to the new campaign, however, with questions marks over the Mercedes car and its radical new design compared to rivals Red Bull and Ferrari.
Hamilton finished third in this year’s opening race in Bahrain, but secured just one point last weekend in Saudi Arabia.
The Brit, who is already 29 points behind championship leader Charles Leclerc of Ferrari, will be back on track at the Australian Grand Prix a week on Sunday.

‘The fish always stinks from the head’ – Ex-Formula 1 team boss hits out at Aston Martin owner Lawrence Stroll saying they’re ‘going nowhere’ under his leadership
Aston Martin are ‘going nowhere’ under Lawrence Stroll, according to former Formula 1 team boss Colin Kolles.
The Canadian billionaire took charge of the team back in 2018 with the target of gatecrashing F1’s elite, however this has proved harder to do that he first thought.
Last weekend’s Saudi Arabian Grand Prix was the fourth consecutive race in which Aston Martin have failed to get a point on the board, meaning that it’s been a less-than impressive start to the 2022 campaign.
But while Sebastian Vettel is yet to make his first appearance of the new season, the man who was part of the team until 2008, Kolles, believes that the Silverstone team are going nowhere fast under Stroll.
Speaking to SPORT1, Kolles said: “It won’t work anymore.
“You have a team owner who thinks he is the team boss, who knows everything better and thinks he should put his son up front with all his might.

“For me, that is the completely wrong approach.
“The fish always stinks from the head. I can see the racing team going nowhere.
“As long as Mr Whitmarsh is in charge and Mr Stroll doesn’t see that he should be staying at home and only giving budgetary guidelines and letting people work who know their stuff and get the right people to lead the team, it will never work in life.”
“If someone thinks they’ll get into Formula 1 and be in the front ranks overnight, then it won’t work that quickly,” he said.
“You have to have a plan. You could have had the plan that new rules would come in 2022 and work on them. However, Mr Stroll decided a few years ago that it should now be done quickly, no matter what the cost.
“There have been many investors who have tried to tell me that they know how business works.
“Then I said that may be, but I think Formula 1 is a bit different.
“I used to tell them if you take a million of any currency and throw it on a fire, the money will burn up just as quickly as in Formula 1 if you don’t know what you’re doing, and that is the case that is happening at Aston Martin.”
