Novak Djokovic’s return to tennis did not go to plan as the world number one lost in his first match at the Monte-Carlo Masters.
Djokovic was beaten 6-3, 6-7, 6-1 by Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, who is currently ranked 46th in the world.

The 2022 Formula 1 campaign is heading to Europe next with the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix at the infamous Imola coming up.
Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc has been the star of the season so far, claiming glory in Bahrain and Melbourne to lead the Championship race.
The Frenchman took a dominant victory in the Australian Grand Prix last weekend to move into a commanding position in the standings.
Last year’s main title contenders Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen have struggled so far this term and will both be eager to put things right in Italy.
Imola is one of the most prestigious race-tracks on the calendar and should provide the perfect stage for another thrilling weekend of action.
Emilia Romagna GP: Date and UK start time
The race weekend in Imola is scheduled for Friday, April 22 to Sunday, April 24.
There will only be two practice sessions while qualifying is set for 4pm UK time on Friday.
This race will see the first of three Sprints this season. The Sprint is set for 3:30pm UK time on Saturday, April 23.
The race itself will get underway at 2pm UK time on the Sunday.
Emilia Romagna GP: Live stream and TV channel
Coverage will again be on Sky Sports F1 throughout the weekend. Their coverage of the Sprint will start at 2:30pm while Sunday’s race build-up begins at 12:30pm.
Sky Sports customers can live stream this via the app using their mobile, tablet or computer devices.
If not, you can purchase a Sky Sports Day Pass from NowTV for £9.99 while Channel Four will broadcast highlights later in the evening.
talkSPORT will have all of the best of the action from Italy throughout the week while talkSPORT.com will have a live blog for the race.

Emilia Romagna GP: Qualification and Sprint
F1 Sprint was introduced last season and saw the grid compete across a 100km dash.
The Imola Sprint will be the first of three this season with the Austrian and Sao Paulo races to follow.
The points system has been changed from last year.
The top eight drivers will score points with the P1 driver receiving eight points, down to one point for P8.
It has also been confirmed that the driver who sets the fastest time in Friday’s qualifying will claim pole for the race and not who wins the Sprint.
Qualifying will also determine the grid for the Sprint, with the result of that then forming the line-up for the race itself.

Emilia Romagna GP: What has been said?
Lewis Hamilton has demanded Mercedes act now to salvage his dwindling title dreams.
“I will be on Zoom calls with our bosses, and really trying to rally them up,” said Hamilton.
“We have got some improvements that we need to make and we need everyone’s support in doing so.
“It is about making sure we leave no stone unturned, that the hunger is there and we are maximising every moment.
“I will be chasing the people in the wind tunnel, the aerodynamic guys, and just looking at every single area.
“There is performance to be gained and we need it now, not in two or three races. I have got to keep that encouragement and energy high.
“I prefer to stay optimistic. There are 20 races to go. I am really hoping we can get in the fight, but with every bit of improvement we make so will Red Bull and Ferrari. It is not going to be easy. The gap is pretty big right now but there is a long way to go.”

Charles Leclerc extended his lead in the Formula 1 title race with a dominant display at the Australian Grand Prix which leaves reigning champion Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton well off the pace.
Leclerc led from lights-out to chequered flag and even claimed the fastest lap to take home a 26-point haul as he beat Sergio Perez by 20.5 seconds, while George Russell came third and Lewis Hamilton finished fourth.
World champion Verstappen failed to reach the chequered flag for the second time in three races as his Red Bull was retired with 19 laps remaining.
“We’re already miles behind, so I don’t even want to think about [the title] at the moment. I think it’s more important to finish races.
“Today in general was just a bad day, not really having the pace and managing my tyres to try and bring it to the end because it looked like quite an easy P2 and I knew I could not fight Charles. There was no point trying to put pressure on him.
“But we didn’t even finish the race so it pretty frustrating and unacceptable.
And Verstappen admitted that pre-race he knew finishing was going to be tough test.
He added: “I knew there was a problem so it was always going to be a question mark of finishing the race. But these kind of things, if you want to fight for the title, cannot happen.”

Hamilton unhappy with Verstappen in qualifying as Leclerc seals Australian GP pole
Leclerc, a two-timer winner this season, is now 34 points clear of second-placed Russell in the standings. Hamilton is fifth, 43 points adrift.
Hamilton started fifth and moved up two positions to third at the start.
The seven-time world champion drew alongside Lando Norris within metres and then moved ahead of Perez after out-braking the Mexican heading into the first corner.
While Leclerc held off Verstappen to lead, there was drama for his Ferrari team-mate Carlos Sainz. Following a poor qualifying, Sainz started ninth, dropped to 14th and went in too hot to Turn 9, running across the grass and then sliding into the gravel.
With Sainz’s Ferrari beached in the sand trap, the safety car was deployed before the race re-started on lap seven.
Three laps later, Perez, in his superior Red Bull machinery blasted past Hamilton to take third, with a Russell-led train forming behind the 37-year-old Mercedes driver.
Hamilton appeared to be struggling, but as the lap counter ticked down, he began to find confidence in his Mercedes. By lap 20, Hamilton had reeled Perez back in, and was crawling all over the Red Bull gearbox before Perez stopped for fresh rubber. Hamilton stopped two laps later and emerged ahead of Perez for a net third.
But Hamilton could not get heat into his new tyres, and Perez outgunned him on the run down to Turn 11 to regain the position. Hamilton was set to launch another attack when the safety car was sent out for a second time.
Sebastian Vettel, who crashed out of final practice and then qualified only 18th, was in the wars again. The four-time world champion ran on to the rumble strip on the exit of Turn 4, lost control of his Aston Martin, and careered into the wall.
Russell took advantage of the safety car to change tyres, promoting him from fifth on the road to third, and ahead of Hamilton.
“George benefitted from the safety car,” Hamilton’s race engineer Peter Bonnington told him on the radio.
Hamilton replied: “What does that mean? I have lost a position?”
“Affirm,” said Bonnington. “It is just bad luck, Lewis.”
The safety car came in at the end of lap 27. Verstappen sensed an opportunity to move ahead of Leclerc, but the Ferrari driver rebuffed the world champion’s advances.
Russell was soon under pressure from Perez.
“If you are hurting the tyres to keep Perez behind, you can let him by,” came the message from the Mercedes pit wall.
“That is not what I want to hear,” Russell replied. And on lap 36, Perez got the job done.
Red Bull looked set to have both their drivers on the podium, but trouble struck for Verstappen when he came to a sudden halt.
That promoted Perez to second and Russell on to the podium. Hamilton finished fourth and said in the closing laps: “You guys put me in a really difficult position.”
Lando Norris finished fifth, one spot ahead of McLaren team-mate Daniel Ricciardo.
Leclerc, who also set the fastest lap, said: “What a car today. I did a good job but it was not possible without the car. We were extremely strong and I am just so happy. Incredible to win here.
“We are only at the third race so it is difficult to think about the championship. But we have a strong car and a reliable one, and if it continues like this, we have a chance for the championship.”

Formula 1 have clamped down on the use of incorrect underwear, as well as body piercings, leaving drivers and team principals rather amused.
F1’s governing body, the FIA, underwent a number of key changes ahead of the 2022 season, with a new president and alternating race directors.
The sport’s new era of aerodynamic regulations has shaken things up on track, but there’s also been plenty to cover within the sporting regulations.
Loose ends have been tidied up in order to avoid the controversy that engulfed last season’s finale, while drivers have also had to be reminded about their dress code.
Ahead of the Australian Grand Prix, director Niels Wittich made it clear to the grid that wearing non-fire retardant underwear isn’t allowed.
The sport’s leaders are keen to avoid any nasty mistakes, with underwear homologated to the FIA’s standards, along with gloves, balaclavas, socks and shoes.
But underwear appears to have provoked the most laughter, with Red Bull boss Christian Horner joking about Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez’s drawers.
“I certainly won’t be checking our drivers’ underwear,” Horner said.

Do F1 Drivers go to the toilet in their suits? How do they drink water during a race?
“For compliance, I see that as a team manager role, although I’m reliably informed our drivers go commando, hopefully, it won’t be an issue for them.
“I’ve yet to meet the race director. Obviously, they’re doing the best job they can with the rules they have. I understand it was an entertaining drivers’ briefing yesterday.
“In the interests of weight-saving, whether you’re losing jewellery or underwear at the moment is quite helpful for us.”
AlphaTauri driver Pierre Gasly was more open about the new rules.
In response to the FIA’s apparent newfound desire to clamp down on drivers’ undergarments, the Frenchman said: “I won’t comment on that.
“If they want to check my arse, feel free, I’ve got nothing to hide. My cock, everything. If that makes them happy, feel free.”
Before the underwear episode, drivers had also been told that body piercings aren’t allowed whilst in the cockpit.
Seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton has been sporting a nose stud in recent years, which led to an amusing exchange between himself and title rival Verstappen.
“Well I’ve got certain piercings that I really just can’t take out, that not many people know of… Nah I’m kidding!” Hamilton joked.
“It’s been the rule forever, since I’ve been here it’s been the rule, so nothing new. I’m just going to come with more jewellery next week.”
World champion Verstappen was also asked about the report, saying: “I would be too heavy if I wore jewellery, so it’s not possible.”
Which prompted a reply from Hamilton: “I know you have a nipple piercing man, come on.”
“You want to see it again?” Verstappen quipped straight back.
Joking aside, Hamilton seemed far from impressed about the FIA’s new clamp down and also complained about the briefing which lasted several hours.
“It was the longest drivers’ briefing of my life,” said the Mercedes driver.
“I’ve been racing a long time and they’ve never done such a long drivers’ briefing.
“Also, nobody in the drivers’ briefing was wearing masks. Some of the drivers were, but most of the FIA weren’t, which was for me uncomfortable.
“And then I don’t really understand the small things they are picking up, like the underwear. Are we really talking about that sort of thing? But we move on.”

Sunday’s Australian Grand Prix is set to produce ‘nail-biting’ racing between championship contenders Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc, talkSPORT has been told.
Albert Park has made its grand return to the Formula 1 calendar after a two-year absence, with 2020’s race cancelled moments before the opening practice of the season as the COVID-19 pandemic struck.
Teams and drivers were ready to kick off the new campaign in Melbourne, as they had done for much of the modern era, but a positive test in the McLaren garage soon triggered the suspension of the season.
F1 later returned in July, but hasn’t travelled to Australia for two years, giving the circuit’s designers plenty of time to improve the picturesque street track.
Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc sits on pole for the second time this season ahead of Max Verstappen, and the new Albert Park has already provided plenty of entertainment.
Friday and Saturday have seen drivers pushing it to the limit throughout the tight and windy 5.2kiliometre track, which has been given a huge dose of extra speed.
Division manager for the race, David Corrigan, told talkSPORT: “It’s so good to have Formula 1 back at Albert Park Grand Prix Circuit.
“The all-new Formula 1 cars will be testing out the newly resurfaced and modified circuit. We’ve sold-old of Saturday and Sunday tickets, we know our fans are waiting to see cars back on track and we are too.”

Seven of the historic track’s corners have been modified, reducing the total number from 16 to 14, and setting Leclerc and Verstappen up for another epic duel.
The duo will fly into turn one in a battle for the lead, which has been improved in preparation.
“Turn one of the opening lap is always a nail-biting moment, where championships can be won and lost in a second,” talkSPORT was told.
“This challenge has been dialled up a notch, thanks to a corner widening of 2.5 metres.
“Drivers will now have multiple racing lines at their disposal, allowing for more opportunities to overtake in the crucial opening moments of the race and throughout.
“The modification is also designed to support more battles following the corner and into both turns two and three.”
Changes to turn six see the minimum speed to corner is taken at dialled up massively from 149km/h to 219km/h, and things get even more serious later on.
Turns nine and ten of the track used to slow drivers down through an unwanted chicane, which has now been removed, allowing drivers to follow at a huge 330km/h, with the help of a record fourth drag reduction system [DRS] zone.
F1 circuits had only previously managed a maximum of three DRS zones, but Albert Park has already been bumped down from four after Friday practice following safety concerns.
“If there was ever a moment for big risk and reward, this is the spot,” talkSPORT was told.
Turns 11 and 13 have also been widened and adjusted, allowing multiple racing lines, as well as punishing those who go off track.
It’s estimated that since Albert Park’s 1996 inception there’s only been one single overtake for the lead of the race.
That marks a stark contrast to the opening two races of the 2022 season, where Leclerc and Verstappen have reignited their long-time rivalry with a series of thrilling battles.
And thankfully, with Australia back on the calendar, chapter three of their bout should be able to resume in blockbuster circumstances.

Lewis Hamilton will start the Australian Grand Prix from fifth on the grid, after he was left fuming with rival Max Verstappen on his playing lap in a dramatic morning of qualifying in Melbourne.
Charles Leclerc secured pole position for Sunday’s race, with Verstappen in second and Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez third, after two big crashes interrupted an entertaining Saturday session.
Lando Norris will line up in fourth for McLaren, while fellow Brit George Russell will start one place behind Mercedes partner Hamilton in sixth, while both Fernando Alonso and Nicholas Latifi caused two red flags with big crashes.
Hamilton will be happy with fifth – a big improvement from the last race in Saudi Arabia where the seven-time world champion qualified only 16th before taking a sole point for finishing 10th in the race.
The British star’s bid for a record eighth crown has been derailed by his uncompetitive Mercedes machinery, as he already sits 29 points behind championship leader Leclerc, and he was left even more frustrated following a move from rival Verstappen, who appeared to interrupt his flying lap.
Hamilton was annoyed during Q2 as he was forced to squeeze past the Red Bull during his flying lap, with the cars coming very close to a collision.
On the team radio, Hamilton was heard saying: “What’s happening with the Red Bull?”
“Copy – complete the lap,” came the reply from the Mercedes paddock, with Hamilton adding: “I had a problem, the Red Bull was in the way.”
Hamilton was not happy with the limited room Verstappen gave him in Q2!

Lewis Hamilton ‘more complete’ than ‘naturally gifted’ Max Verstappen
Verstappen didn’t leave the Mercedes driver enough room as he looked to set a fast time on his flying lap, but the Dutchman didn’t appear to know Hamilton was racing.
On team radio, Verstappen said: “Wait, was he on a lap?
His team replied:: “Hamilton was on a lap, yeah.”
The Silver Arrows remain some way off rivals Red Bull and Ferrari, who have established themselves at the top of the class for 2022. Hamilton ultimately languished almost a full second behind Leclerc – a huge gap in F1 terms.
The top ten drivers were forced to change their visors for Q3 with the sun setting at Albert Park.
“Mate, I can’t see s*** with the sun,” said Verstappen. “I am completely blinded.”
The final action was then delayed with just six minutes and 58 seconds remaining after Fernando Alonso crashed out.
The double world champion lost control of his Alpine through Turn 11, running into the gravel and then the tyre wall.
“I lost the hydraulics and could not change gear,” he said over the radio.
Alonso had just set the fastest middle sector of all, but will start no higher than tenth. A delay of 13 minutes followed as Alonso’s wounded machine was cleared from danger.
Fernando Alonso goes flying into the barriers after setting a purple middle sector!
Fellow Canadian Latifi said: “I don’t understand what he was doing. He wasn’t looking in his mirrors. The f****** car is destroyed.”
The suspension did allow the Aston Martin mechanics to complete their repair job on Sebastian Vettel’s machine – damaged in final practice.
Vettel completed one flying lap and qualified 18th, bumped up one spot on the grid following Alexander Albon’s three-place penalty for his collision with Stroll at the last round in Saudi Arabia.
talkSPORT LIVE – Brazil and Parlour
Alan Brazil and Ray Parlour are the most lethal strike force on British radio.
Now the Breakfast show double act are taking their live stage show on the road to a select few towns.
Both have lived life to the full both in their playing days and subsequently on and after their talkSPORT radio show!
Hear from both legends as they recount tales from the dressing room, from the studio, from their playing days, travels on international duty… and of course Cheltenham.
Former Formula 1 world champion Jenson Button says Lewis Hamilton is ‘more complete’ than ‘naturally gifted’ Max Verstappen who has racing ‘in his blood’.
The 2009 title winner raced alongside Hamilton for three years at McLaren, and also faced off against both of Verstappen’s parents.
Button also has experience driving against world champion Verstappen during his first years in F1, and gave his insight on the differences between the two.
Verstappen took his maiden title last season in a championship bout for the ages where the Red Bull and Mercedes drivers battled all season.
Hamilton and his Dutch rival headed into the final race level on points before Verstappen claimed the title in jaw-dropping fashion on the final lap of the season.
It was the first time Verstappen had been able to fight Hamilton in competitive machinery, but Button isn’t too sure that ends any debate about who is better.
Asked about Verstappen, Button told Sky Sports: “Naturally gifted? Yes. Is he the best? I don’t know if he’s the best driver that has ever lived or the best in F1 now.
“When you look at Lewis, you think he is a much more complete racing driver with a lot more experience, maybe that’s why.

“He [Verstappen] has got to work hard. Even if you think you’re the best, there’s still more you can do to be better. That’s where Michael Schumacher was so strong.”
One man who raced against both Button and Schumacher is Verstappen’s father Jos, who is now regularly seen supporting his son at race weekends.
Verstappen’s mother, Sophie Kumpen, was also a professional racer who Button also battled against.
“When you look at Max’s parents, his dad raced in F1,” Button explained. “I raced against his dad and my first points finish was in Brazil in my second race. To get that point, I had to overtake his dad, Jos.
“You didn’t want to get him upset. There was a little bit of aggression there.
“He was an amazing talent, one of the best kart drivers ever, and still probably to this day. And his mother, Sophie, I was team-mates with her in karting.
“She was a professional and one of the best in the world, so it’s definitely in the blood.”
