Sergio Perez wins three-hour Monaco epic as Charles Leclerc’s hometown hoodoo continues by losing victory and gifting Max Verstappen title advantage
A furious Charles Leclerc was denied home victory at the Monaco Grand Prix as a Ferrari mix-up gifted Sergio Perez the win, and extended Max Verstappen’s title lead.
Carlos Sainz followed Perez home, with Verstappen third, and Leclerc fourth in a rain-delayed day of chaos in the south of France.
An hour halt on proceedings as rain began to fall looked to have robbed fans of an uncharacteristically entertaining Monaco race, but pit-stop chaos made sure it was a must-watch event.
Ferrari’s Monegasque star Leclerc looked to have ended his hometown jinx as he defended his pole position in the rain. But as the track dried, chaos ensued.
A botched pit-stop call as the track dried saw Leclerc called in the same time as teammate Sainz, before being told to stay out.
“F***! Why? What are you doing!” Leclerc shouted, as he was first told to box, and then stay out.
“No words,” he later added.
That saw his lead lost to Perez, with the Red Bulls holding on for track position on the Ferraris, and kept it until the end of the race.
A horror crash which saw Mick Schumacher’s Haas split in half provoked another red flag, and despite the top four ending the race barely metres from each other, Perez easily held on.
