Sergio Perez wags finger at fans booing Lewis Hamilton at Mexican Grand Prix, as British star says it was ‘awkward’
Sergio Perez told fans at his home Grand Prix in Mexico to stop booing Lewis Hamilton.
The seven-time Formula One champion was jeered by the spectators following the race in Mexico City on Sunday where Max Verstappen claimed his 14th race win of the year as he finished 15.1 seconds ahead of Hamilton.
Verstappen’s Red Bull teammate Perez rounded off the podium in his home race.
The Mexican was then seen wagging his finger to the crowd after he heard boos directed towards Hamilton.
The British driver addressed the jeering after the race.
“It has definitely been a bit awkward this time around with boos all day,” said Hamilton. “But, nevertheless I have so much love for Mexico and for the people here.
“I was so close [to Verstappen] in that first stint but I think the Red Bull was clearly too fast and ultimately they had the better tyre strategy.

“I’m not sure the hard tyre was the right tyre at the end. I thought we should have started the race on the soft [rather than the medium], but obviously we had the opposite tyre to them.”
Hamilton’s rivals, Red Bull meanwhile, decided to boycott Sky Sports in Mexico a week after pit-lane reporter Ted Kravitz said the Brit was ‘robbed’ of an eighth world championship at last year’s controversial finale in Abu Dhabi.
Hamilton now has only two races to retain his unique record of winning at least one race in each season he has competed, since his debut in 2007.
The final two races are in Brazil on November 13 and Abu Dhabi a week later.

Christian Horner and Red Bull to boycott Sky Sports ‘indefinitely’ following comments from Ted Kravitz about Max Verstappen’s world title win ahead of Lewis Hamilton in 2021
Red Bull are set to boycott Sky Sports ‘indefinitely’ following comments by reporter Ted Kravitz.
Starting in Mexico, it meant that Max Verstappen, Sergio Perez and team principle Christian Horner all refused interviews with the broadcasterat the grand prix, according to the Press Association.
Kravitz is regarded as one of the most reputable media personalities in the sport with Sky Sports being F1’s official broadcasting partner in the UK.
However, the Formula 1 reporter looks to have made an enemy of Red Bull for comments that were made about Verstappen’s title win last year.
Now a two-time world champion, the Dutch star won the 2021 title in controversial fashion.
A late overtake of Mercedes star Lewis Hamilton, brought about by a safety car, in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix will go down in sporting history.
Speaking at last week’s United States Grand Prix, Kravitz said that Hamilton was ‘robbed’ by Verstappen last year, before saying that he only beat the Mercedes star in Austin, Texas last week due to having a faster car.
Kravitz said: “[Hamilton] doesn’t win a race all year, and then finally comes back at a track where he could win the first race all year, battling the same guy who won the race he was robbed in the previous year, and manages to finish ahead of him.

“What a script and a story that would have been. But that’s not the way the script turned out today, was it?
“Because the guy that beat him [Verstappen] after being robbed actually overtook him, because he’s got a quicker car, because of engineering and Formula 1 and design, and pretty much because of [Adrian Newey, Red Bull’s Chief Technical Officer] over there.”
In Mexico, though, Verstappen put the drama to one side to win his 14th race of the year, more than any other driver.
When Hamilton exited his car, boos were heard from the crowd, but he didn’t let it effect him.
“This has been an amazing crowd, definitely a bit awkward this time around,” he said. “Boos all day, but nonetheless I have so much love for Mexico and for the people here and what a great race event they put on this weekend.”
