Andy Murray faces all-British first round Wimbledon clash but handed horror second round draw

Andy Murray faces a first round clash at Wimbledon against fellow Brit Ryan Peniston.

If he passes that test then the two-time Wimbledon champion will face former US Open champion Dominic Thiem or Stefanos Tsitsipas in the second round.

Peniston reached the second round of Wimbledon last year

Murray just missed out on being seeded for Wimbledon this year, which would have meant avoiding some of the biggest names until the third round.

The 36-year-old was ranked 39th in the world at the time of the seedings and needed just a few more withdrawals to make it in.

He could have got there with a good run at Queen’s, but lost to finalist Alex De Minaur in the first round.

As ever with Murray, he will have to battle the hard way to make a run at the All England Club and we’d never bet against him.

It is 10 years on from that first Wimbledon title when he became the first male British Grand Slam champion since Fred Perry.

That was a glorious day for Murray, British tennis and the whole of the UK.

He finally got over the line after losing in the previous year’s final to Roger Federer, and having reached the semi-finals in the three years before 2012 too.

Murray won it again in 2016, but has only played at Wimbledon twice since 2017.

The three-time Grand Slam champion has had well documented injury problems that led to having career-saving hip surgery.

Results have not been what they were at his world number one peak in 2016, where he made the final of the Australian and French Opens as well as winning a second Wimbledon.

It has been an absolute roller coaster of emotions watching Murray matches in recent years.

You just have to look at his epic battles with Matteo Berrettini and Thanasi Kokkinakis at the Australian Open in January.

Can Andy Murray win Wimbledon? The chances are very remote but it’s going to be an epic journey that we can’t wait for.

Liam Broady faces Constant Lestienne, while Jan Choinski is against Dusan Lajovic.

Three British players drew seeds – Heather Watson, who reached the fourth round last year, plays former French Open champion Barbora Krejcikova, Katie Swan meets 14th seed Belinda Bencic and Sonay Kartal takes on 25th seed Madison Keys.

Harriet Dart and Jodie Burrage fared better – the former drawing France’s Diane Parry and the latter American Caty McNally.

How much money has Andy Murray made from tennis and what’s his net worth? Superstar Brit preparing to add to immense wealth at Wimbledon

Andy Murray is one of Britain’s most recognisable sportspeople and a tennis icon.

The Scot has managed to turn his success on the court into a sizeable chunk of wealth that he hopes to add to at Wimbledon.

The 36-year-old is back at SW19 seeking his third men’s singles title, although he isn’t even remotely one of the favourites.

However, despite injuries ruining his career over the last few years, tennis has been good to Murray, and when he retires, he will be very wealthy.

How much money has Andy Murray made from tennis?

Since Murray turned pro in 2005, he has played nearly 1000 tennis games across all formats and racked up 725 wins, compared to just 242 losses.

The Scottish-born star is one of the greatest players of the modern game and has won nine Grand Slams and two Olympic gold medals.

He has been successful at SW19 twice, which has contributed to Murray pocketing £50million in prize money.

This substantial sum just comes from Murray’s tennis career and doesn’t take into account anything else.

However, despite being the former world number one, he has dipped to number 39 in 2023, losing nine games and winning eight.

But he has still earned £412,375 in prize money this year alone.

This is nothing compared to the £10.8m he won during 2016, arguably one of his greatest years as he reached three Grand Slam finals.

What is Andy Murray’s net worth?

Murray’s earnings take up a huge proportion of his worth, but he has other ways of making money.

And after you have taken everything into account, you can see that Murray is worth around £130m, according to the Sun.

The tennis star has several sponsorship deals that see him rake in the cash.

He has a long-term contract with TRR Nutrition and a similar deal with sportswear makers Castore.

Murray had a four-year deal with Under Armour that guaranteed him £15m.

The two-time Wimbledon champion also has an agreement with Jaguar and is the sole shareholder of 77 Management.

The Brit owns a luxury 19th-century hotel in Scotland, Cromlix House, that costs a minimum of £220 per night.

And on the property market, he managed to sell his Miami flat in 2016 for a cool £1m profit.

So although he has made a huge chunk of money on the court, Murray has been savvy off it and will retire from tennis a very rich man.

Why did Roger Federer retire and how many Grand Slams and Wimbledon titles did he win? Tennis legend holds record at SW19

This year’s Wimbledon will be the first since the great Roger Federer retired from tennis.

Federer, who is considered one of the sport’s best players of all time, decided to call time on his career late last year.

The 41-year-old dominated the Grand Slams for over 15 years and the tennis world was filled with emotion as they said goodbye to a legend.

But why did he decide to retire and how many titles did he lift throughout his illustrious career?

Why did Roger Federer retire?

Federer retired after struggling with a long-term knee injury.

The Swiss icon had been suffering with knee issues for around three years before finally making the decision to stop playing tennis.

He released a statement ahead of the 2022 Laver Cup to confirm that it would be his last tournament, citing his ‘body’s capacities and limits’ as a reason for his retirement.

Federer wrote: “As many of you know, the past three years have presented me with challenges in the form of injuries and surgeries.

“I’ve worked hard to return to full competitive form. But I also know my body’s capacities and limits, and its message to me lately has been clear.

“I am 41 years old. I have played more than 1,500 matches over 24 years.

“Tennis has treated me more generously than I ever would have dreamt, and now I must recognise when it is time to end my competitive career.”

How many Grand Slam titles did he win?

Federer won 20 Grand Slam titles throughout his career.

This is the third most of all time behind Rafael Nadal (22) and Novak Djokovic (23).

Eight of those 20 Grand Slams have come at Wimbledon which puts Federer in the record books for the most titles ever at SW19.

Although Djokovic will be out to equal that tally this summer as he aims to add another All England Club trophy to his cabinet.

Federer’s first Grand Slam came in 2003 and began an incredible run of titles which saw him win seven straight finals that he competed in.

He won Wimbledon for the final time in 2017 and then picked up his last-ever title at the Australian Open five years ago.
