Mercedes boss Toto Wolff calls for ‘more transparency’ from Red Bull over Christian Horner investigation

Toto Wolff has called on Formula 1 to demand ‘more transparency’ from Red Bull following their investigation into Christian Horner.

The Red Bull team principal was recently cleared of allegations of ‘inappropriate behaviour’ towards a female colleague ahead of the Bahrain Grand Prix season opener.

Horner was cleared over allegations of inappropriate behaviour by Red Bull

He will now continue his role at Red Bull following the internal probe, and is free to carry on with his job.

But his Mercedes counterpart Wolff has challenged F1 chiefs to review Red Bull’s investigation.

Wolff said: “I just read the statement, which was pretty basic. My personal opinion is we can’t really look behind the curtain.

“There is a lady in an organisation that has spoken to HR and said there was an issue and it was investigated and yesterday the sport has received the message that it’s all fine, we’ve looked at it.

“I believe with the aspiration as a global sport, on such critical topics, it needs more transparency and I wonder what the sport’s position is?

“We’re competitors, we’re a team and we can have our own personal opinions or not.

“But it’s more like a general reaction or action that we as a sport need to assess, what is right in that situation and what is wrong.

“Are we talking with the right moral approach, with the values based on the speculation that is out there?

“As a sport, we cannot afford to leave things in the vague and in the opaque on critical topics like this, because this is going to catch us out.”

Zak Brown, the chief executive officer for McLaren Racing, echoed Wolff’s views, as he insisted the FIA should press for more details from Red Bull.

He remarked: “I read this statement. I think from what I’ve seen there continues to be a lot of rumours and speculation, questions.

“I think the sanctioning body has a responsibility and authority to our sport, to our officials.

“I think all of us in Formula 1 are ambassadors for the sport on and off the track, like you see in other sports, and so I think they need to make sure that things have been fully transparent with them.

“And I don’t know what those conversations are and that needs to be thorough, fully transparent, and that they come to the same conclusion that has been given by Red Bull, and that they’ve agreed with the outcome.

“But I think until then, there’ll continue to be speculation because there are a lot of unanswered questions about the whole process.

“So I think that’s what’s needed by those that run the sport to really be able to draw a line under it.

“Until then, I think there’ll continue to be some level of speculation by people and I don’t think that’s healthy for the sport.”

Throughout his investigation, Horner maintained his innocence and denied all allegations against him.

The 50-year-old is the longest-serving team principal on the grid having been appointed in 2015.

Why is the Bahrain Grand Prix on a Saturday? 2024 F1 season opener moved to unique time

The 2024 Formula 1 season will speed back onto the sporting calendar earlier than ever this weekend.

The new F1 campaign was always due to be held at an advanced date due to a record 24 Grands Prix taking place this year.

However, the 2024 season opener in Bahrain has been moved forward even earlier.

Race weekends typically take place across three days, with Friday practice, qualifying on Saturday, before concluding with Grand Prix Sunday.

But this year, the world’s best drivers first got behind the wheel on Thursday ahead of the main race on Saturday.

Why is the Bahrain GP on a Saturday?

Bahrain, which has hosted the F1 season opener since 2021, has previously held each race on a Sunday as is the sport’s custom.

However, due to Ramadan, the 2024 race will be on Saturday night.

The Islamic holy month of Ramadan, a key religious holiday for the Muslim community, starts on Sunday, March 10.

That is the initially scheduled for the Saudi Arabia Grand Prix, the second race due to take place in the 2024 F1 calendar.

To avoid a clash with Ramadan, F1 organisers brought forward the race in Jeddah by one day to Saturday, March 9.

In turn, that decision has had a knock-on effect on the Bahrain GP, with FIA rules dictating that there must be at least seven days between races.

The two Grand Prix are not the only races this year to be held on a Saturday, with the Las Vegas GP also falling on a Saturday.

“We have found a solution so that European fans can watch the race with a cup of coffee at six or seven in the morning, just like it happens in the U.S. during the European races,” said Las Vegas GP CEO, Renee Wilm.

Christian Horner conducts awkward first interview after being cleared of misconduct by Red Bull

Christian Horner has given his first interview since being cleared of misconduct by Red Bull.

The long-time team principal and CEO was exonerated by an independent barrister after a bombshell story emerged on February 6 that a female employee had accused him of ‘inappropriate behaviour’.

Red Bull, the company behind Horner’s Red Bull Racing team, launched an independent investigation and came under pressure from Formula 1 and sponsors Ford to come to a swift resolution.

Just over three weeks since the story emerged, Horner was cleared on the eve of the 2024 Formula 1 season less than 24 hours before cars hit the track for Thursday practice in Bahrain.

The 50-year-old had already attended the team’s RB20 car launch, where he told talkSPORT it was ‘business as usual’.

And emerging from Red Bull hospitality for the first time in Sakhir, Horner was asked if the outcome was what he expected.

“Look, I’m just pleased that the process is over,” he said. “I obviously can’t comment about it but here the focus is very much on the Grand Prix and the season ahead and trying to defend both of our titles.”

Pressed on whether the story is over, he added: “I can’t give any comment but the process has been conducted and concluded. I’m afraid I’m not going to be able to give you any any further comment on it but I’m pleased to be here in Bahrain with the team focused on the season ahead.”

Asked if the team is unified, he finished: “Within the team it’s never been stronger.”

His statements were the first out of Red Bull since the team itself announced the outcome of the investigation.

Speaking on February 28, they said: “The independent investigation into the allegations made against Mr Horner is complete, and Red Bull can confirm that the grievance has been dismissed.

“The complainant has a right of appeal. Red Bull is confident that the investigation has been fair, rigorous and impartial.

“The investigation report is confidential and contains the private information of the parties and third parties who assisted in the investigation, and therefore we will not be commenting further out of respect for all concerned. Red Bull will continue striving to meet the highest workplace standards.”
