Sir Andy Murray has revealed his aim for the Australian Open in 2020 is to simply get through a five-set match without feeling pain.
The three-time Grand Slam champion has been sidelined for 18 months due to a chronic hip injury, but is set to make his return to a major down under in January.
The Brit feared he would have to retire at the start of the year due to the injury, but having undergone surgery earlier this year he is now back playing at the top level again.
Murray was speaking to talkSPORT ahead of the release of a new Amazon documentary, charting his remarkable return from injury.
And the 32-year-old unsurprisingly has modest hopes when he returns to action.
“I haven’t played a best of five match since I had the operation,” he said. “A good result would be that I can play a best-of-five set match and have no ill effects from that with my hip.
“That would be a huge step and a really positive thing for me. That means I’d be able to compete and hopefully do well at the grand slams in the future, which is what I would like to do.

Murray has dropped down the world rankings during his recovery, meaning he will be unseeded for the tournament and could therefore face any top player in the tournament.
But the Scot is not wary about who he could come up against and is instead focused on simply seeing out a long match.
He continued: “When I get to the Australian Open I won’t be seeded, I’m ranked around 120 in the world right now.
“I could play [Roger] Federer in the first round, or [Novak] Djokovic, I wouldn’t be expecting myself to win that match in a first best of five back.
“I have no idea what to expect result wise, but what would be positive for me would be playing through a best of five match without having a problem with my hip.”
Murray also cast some light on his plans after he hangs up his racket.
He continued: “What was nice about the film was that I got to see what that would look like. After I had my second operation I got to see that without tennis I can be pain free and happy and have a great life.
“That’s something I’ve been worried about these last few years – what to do with myself.
“I;ve been playing tennis since i was really young – my whole adult life. I still don’t know exactly what I’ll do but i have a few more interests now.
“I defintely want to stay in tennis, maybe not immediately as I’d like to take a break and some time away just to be at home with my family.
“I would see myself having some sort of involvement in tennis, maybe in a coaching capacity.”
