The Australian Grand Prix is due to go ahead as planned despite the ongoing coronavirus epidemic already postponing one race of the 2020 Formula 1 season.
Organisers of the race at the Albert Park Circuit in Melbourne insist the opening round of the season is ‘all systems go’ with slightly under a fortnight before the March 15 event.
Even though the race does not take place until a week on Sunday, the majority of F1 personnel are set to travel to Melbourne at the latter end of this week.
The Australian GP Corporation are working with health authorities over the coronavirus outbreak, but their chief executive, Andrew Westacott, says all is going ahead as planned as of today.
“We are all systems go.” said Westacott in a statement:
“At this stage there is no indication of further travel bans, nor is there any indication that Formula One and the teams will not be arriving as usual.
“Formula One has again confirmed overnight that the Australian Grand Prix is going ahead.”
COVID-19 has already affected the 2020 F1 season.
The Chinese Grand Prix, scheduled to take place in Shanghai on April 19, has been postponed due to the coronavirus, with the first case identified in Wuhan last December.

Motorsport’s governing body the FIA said in a statement last month: “In view of the continued spread of novel coronavirus and after ongoing discussions with the Federation of Automobile and Motorcycle Sports of People’s Republic of China (CAMF) and Shanghai Administration of Sports, the Chinese Grand Prix Promoter, Juss Sports Group, has officially requested that the 2020 FIA Formula One Chinese Grand Prix be postponed.
“The FIA, together with Formula One, have have jointly decided to accept this official request from the promoter and postpone the 2020 FIA Formula 1 Chinese Grand Prix, originally scheduled for 19 April.
“As a result of continued health concerns and with the World Health Organisation declaring the coronavirus as a global health emergency, the FIA and Formula One have taken these measures in order to ensure the health and safety of the travelling staff, championship participants and fans, which remains of primary concern.”
