Sebastian Vettel to return to racing with new role in ‘Formula 1 of the sea’

Sebastian Vettel has announced his first sports venture since retiring from Formula 1, trading the race track for the ocean.

The four time F1 champion was seen at the Monaco Grand Prix last time out linking back up with good friend Lewis Hamilton in his first race sighting since ending his career.

And now he’s returning to action of sorts by investing in SailGP, with a Germany team run by himself and double Olympic sailing bronze medalist Erik Heli.

Vettel is well known for promoting good causes, regularly raising climate change awareness with his helmets and custom made t-shirts during race weekends.

In 2021 the former Red Bull and Ferrari driver even risked a penalty or fine for wearing a rainbow coloured shirt on the grid in Hungary amid the backdrop of strict anti-LGBT laws being pushed through parliament.

His latest project continues the trend of supporting good causes, with wind power at the heart of the sport.

“I see a lot of potential as SailGP starts its fourth season and for the first time with a German team,” the 35-year-old said. “Parallels between sailors and Formula 1 have long existed.

“The boats are fascinating and the speeds on the water are incredibly high. The races are exciting and I am happy to be close to them with a motivated group of young sailors.

“In addition, the series not only uses wind power, but also strives to set new standards in sustainability in sports.”

Former F1 title rival Hamilton was delighted to see Vettel in Monaco, posting pictures of the two, showing their closeness after battling while at Mercedes and Ferrari.

As part of Vettel’s sustainability push, he drove Nigel Mansell’s 1992 championship winning Williams around Silverstone last year before the Grand Prix with the car fully powered by sustainable fuels.

Vettel owns that car, and will again be showcasing it as this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed.
